IBM CEO Arvind Krishna believes quantum computing is approaching a major commercial breakthrough, predicting that the technology will begin generating measurable revenue and profits for the company by 2028 or 2029. Speaking about IBM's long-term strategy, Krishna said quantum computing could create trillions of dollars in economic value by the end of the 2030s as it transforms industries ranging from healthcare to energy and advanced manufacturing.

His comments came as IBM and startup AlgorithmQ unveiled new research claiming a significant quantum computing advantage, demonstrating that quantum systems can solve certain complex problems faster and more efficiently than today's most powerful classical computers while also verifying the accuracy of the results. Krishna explained that IBM's quantum machines are already helping scientists discover previously unseen material behaviors that could pave the way for stronger batteries, next-generation materials, cleaner fusion energy, and more effective medicines.

Although experts remain divided on how quickly quantum computing will become commercially practical, IBM maintains that real-world applications are progressing faster than many expected. The company is also benefiting from growing government support for strategic technologies. Earlier this year, the U.S. government announced major investments in domestic quantum computing initiatives, including funding for an IBM-backed venture focused on manufacturing quantum chips as part of efforts to strengthen American technological leadership and reduce dependence on foreign supply chains.

Krishna also addressed investor concerns following IBM's recent earnings report, which triggered one of the largest single-day declines in the company's share price. He clarified that many enterprise customers had postponed technology spending rather than canceling projects altogether, noting that a significant portion of delayed deals had already resumed within weeks. According to Krishna, this indicates that customer demand remains healthy despite temporary economic uncertainty.

IBM continues to invest heavily in both artificial intelligence and quantum computing, viewing the two technologies as complementary pillars of its long-term growth strategy. As businesses seek faster computing power to solve increasingly complex scientific and industrial challenges, IBM believes quantum computing could become one of the most transformative technologies of the next decade. If the company's projections prove accurate, quantum computing may soon shift from an experimental research field into a major commercial industry capable of reshaping global innovation and business.
