Oracle employees face new layoff threat months after March job cuts
### Oracle Reportedly Prepares for Another Round of Job Cuts Amid AI Spending Surge

Oracle is reportedly preparing for another round of job cuts as the technology company works to reduce payroll while committing billions of dollars to artificial intelligence infrastructure. According to reports citing people familiar with the plans and an internal document, managers have been asked to identify employees who could be affected by potential reductions. The cuts could come just months after Oracle significantly reduced its workforce during the previous fiscal year. Oracle’s headcount fell by approximately 21,000 employees, or 13%, during the fiscal year that ended May 31, 2026. The company acknowledged in a regulatory filing that layoffs contributed to the decline. Oracle currently employs roughly 141,000 people, meaning further reductions could affect a significant number of workers across different business units. The reported layoffs are part of an effort to reduce payroll costs ahead of the company’s second quarter, which begins September 1. The scale of the cuts could differ across teams, with some groups potentially facing reductions reaching double-digit percentages. Managers have reportedly already been asked to provide names of employees who could be affected. Oracle’s workforce reductions highlight the difficult balance the company is facing as it aggressively expands its artificial intelligence infrastructure business. The company is investing heavily in data centers, computing capacity and cloud infrastructure to meet rapidly growing demand for AI services. Oracle spent approximately $55.7 billion on infrastructure during fiscal 2026, including investment in new data centers. That spending contributed to a cash outflow of about $23.7 billion beyond the cash generated by the company during the year. At the same time, Oracle’s restructuring expenses increased sharply. The company recorded approximately $1.84 billion in severance and other restructuring-related costs during fiscal 2026, compared with $374 million a year earlier. Oracle has said workforce changes can result from several factors, including management and product changes, performance concerns, strategic realignments and acquisitions. The company’s spending ambitions are continuing to increase as it seeks to capture more of the AI infrastructure market. Oracle expects net capital expenditures to reach approximately $70 billion during the current fiscal year. To help finance its expansion, the company plans to raise an additional $40 billion through a combination of debt and equity, following an already announced $20 billion stock offering. The aggressive investment strategy has created growing concerns among investors about Oracle’s rising financial obligations. Despite the cost pressures, the company’s underlying business continues to show strong growth. Oracle’s revenue increased 17% during the latest fiscal year, while its cloud infrastructure business grew 77%. The company also reported a 95% increase in net income to $6.13 billion in a recent quarter. CEO Clay Magouyrk has highlighted Oracle’s approximately $553 billion in remaining performance obligations as evidence of strong demand for its AI computing capacity. The figure represents contracted business that Oracle expects to recognize as revenue in the future. However, investors remain cautious about the cost of fulfilling those commitments and the debt required to support the company’s infrastructure expansion. Oracle shares have declined about 26% this year amid concerns over increasing debt and a wider technology-sector selloff. The company is also navigating broader questions about whether advances in artificial intelligence could eventually disrupt traditional enterprise software businesses. For Oracle, the current strategy represents a major financial trade-off: spend aggressively to establish a larger position in AI infrastructure while reducing costs in other areas. The potential layoffs therefore reflect more than a conventional corporate restructuring. They demonstrate how the rapid expansion of AI is changing workforce priorities and financial strategies across the technology industry. As Oracle prepares for another possible round of reductions, employees are facing renewed uncertainty while investors weigh the potential rewards and risks of the company’s massive AI investment strategy.
