Google expands Gemini Enterprise AI platform for lawyers
Google is expanding its artificial intelligence business into the legal sector with the launch of Gemini Enterprise for Legal, a specialized platform designed to help law firms manage legal and administrative work more efficiently.

The new platform brings together AI agents, legal software integrations and business data connections to support lawyers in handling a wide range of tasks. Google said the technology can assist with activities such as contract review, legal research, regulatory monitoring and document preparation, allowing lawyers to spend more time on complex and high-value work.

The company is positioning the platform as an alternative to general-purpose AI tools because it is designed specifically around the needs and workflows of legal organizations. Gemini Enterprise for Legal can connect with widely used legal technology platforms, including Thomson Reuters, Harvey and LexisNexis, while Google is also working with iManage, NetDocuments, DocuSign, Everlaw and RelativityOne.

Security and confidentiality are major priorities for the platform because law firms regularly handle sensitive client information, privileged communications and confidential legal strategies. Google said the system can work within existing permissions and access controls, reducing the need for firms to establish separate security structures for AI applications.

The company also stated that client data, firm-specific information, intellectual property, custom agents and AI-generated outputs will remain private and will not be used to train or fine-tune Google’s foundation models. Several major law firms, including Cleary Gottlieb, Freshfields, Weil and Williams & Connolly, are already working with Google on the platform.

Weil has said it is among the early adopters and plans to collaborate with Google Cloud to help develop the technology for advanced legal practices. The launch comes as law firms and other professional organizations are rapidly increasing their use of generative AI for research, drafting, document analysis and business operations.

Google’s entry adds further competition to a growing market that includes Anthropic, OpenAI, Microsoft and Thomson Reuters. Thomson Reuters recently introduced its own large language model, Thomson 1.0, which is aimed at professional users and uses the company’s legal research content.

Google is also pursuing a broader industry-focused AI strategy, with specialized solutions being developed for financial services and other professional fields. The company believes that embedding AI directly into existing legal workflows could help firms improve productivity while maintaining greater control over sensitive information.

However, the success of Gemini Enterprise for Legal will depend on whether law firms can use the technology to achieve meaningful efficiency gains without sacrificing accuracy, confidentiality and the professional judgment required in legal practice.
