Michael Dell has overtaken Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to become the world’s third-richest person, as a sharp rise in Dell Technologies shares significantly increased the computer entrepreneur’s fortune.
According to Forbes, Dell’s net worth climbed by $4.6 billion on Tuesday to an estimated $267.7 billion after Dell Technologies shares gained 1.9% and closed at a record $533.88.
Dell now ranks behind only Google co-founder Larry Page and Tesla CEO Elon Musk on the latest billionaire wealth rankings.
Page has an estimated fortune of $277.9 billion, while Musk remains the world’s richest individual with a net worth of approximately $942 billion.
Bezos, meanwhile, slipped into fourth place after Amazon shares declined 0.6%, reducing his estimated wealth by about $1.4 billion to $265.2 billion.
The shift represents a dramatic rise for Dell, who began 2026 with an estimated fortune of $141 billion and ranked 13th among the world’s wealthiest people.
His wealth has increased by roughly $126.7 billion since the beginning of the year, representing a gain of nearly 90%.
A major portion of Dell’s wealth comes from his ownership stake in Dell Technologies, which has emerged as the biggest driver of his recent financial gains.
Dell owns approximately 40% of the technology company, whose stock has climbed around 327% since the start of 2026.
The company’s remarkable market performance has been fueled in part by strong demand for computing infrastructure required to build and operate artificial intelligence systems.
The AI boom has helped boost investor interest in technology companies supplying the hardware and infrastructure needed for increasingly powerful AI applications.
Dell’s rapid rise has also reshaped the rankings of the world’s richest technology entrepreneurs.
In recent months, he moved past Meta co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison before eventually surpassing Bezos.
The 61-year-old entrepreneur founded his computer business in 1984 while studying at the University of Texas at Austin.
He launched the venture with just $1,000 and eventually left college to concentrate on expanding the company.
What began as a small business operated from a college dorm room ultimately developed into Dell Technologies, one of the largest technology companies in the world.
Dell recently recalled the early decision to leave college, sharing a 1984 quarterly earnings report on X that he said persuaded his parents to support his decision.
His dramatic increase in wealth has come as investors continue to favor businesses positioned to benefit from the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence.
Dell Technologies shares reached an intraday high of $538.47 on Tuesday before ending the session at $533.88.
The latest gains have placed Dell among the world’s three richest people for the first time.
The development highlights how quickly stock-market movements can reshape the fortunes of technology billionaires, particularly those with large ownership stakes in publicly traded companies.
As of September 2026, Musk remains in first place with an estimated fortune of $942 billion, followed by Page at $277.9 billion.
Dell ranks third with approximately $267.7 billion, while Bezos stands fourth with an estimated $265.2 billion.
