The ‘Littman Test’: How much do we need to know to trust an AI answer?
# AI May Boost Performance, But Are Humans Losing the Ability to Understand the Work?

What happens when the technology we increasingly depend on suddenly disappears? If electricity failed or access to artificial intelligence vanished tomorrow, many professionals might discover that they are less prepared to perform without digital assistance than they once were.

Not long ago, people who created presentations, reports and analyses themselves were deeply familiar with the process behind the finished product. Even when the work was imperfect, producing it involved multiple rounds of thinking, editing and problem-solving. Those iterations helped build knowledge and judgment.

The rapid adoption of generative AI is changing that relationship. People can now produce sophisticated presentations, reports and answers without necessarily experiencing all of the reasoning and experimentation that once went into creating them.

This question was explored during a recent episode of the *Learning Machines* podcast featuring Michael L. Littman, University Professor of Computer Science and Associate Provost for Artificial Intelligence at Brown University. Littman has spent much of his career studying machine learning, particularly how systems make decisions when outcomes are uncertain.

His ideas led to what the discussion called the “Littman Test,” a simple framework for examining human responsibility when machines contribute to decisions or creative work.

The central question is whether a person can explain why an AI-assisted decision was made, defend the reasoning behind it and accept responsibility for what happens afterward.

Littman expressed the idea more directly: If someone later asks a person to defend a decision, can that person actually provide a meaningful defense? Simpl
