San Francisco International Airport gets upgraded with Air India’s new Maharaja lounge
✈️🇮🇳 Air India has officially opened its first-ever international signature lounge, **“The Maharaja Lounge,”** at San Francisco International Airport, marking a major milestone in the airline’s global transformation strategy and its push to redefine premium Indian hospitality for international travelers.

Located inside SFO’s International Terminal A, the luxury lounge represents Air India’s first flagship lounge outside India and serves as a symbolic gateway for what the airline calls the “New Air India” era under the Tata Group’s modernization efforts. Designed by globally recognized hospitality firm Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA), the space blends contemporary luxury with Indian-inspired aesthetics, moving away from traditional airline lounge designs.

The Maharaja Lounge features upscale interiors inspired by Indian heritage, including curated artwork created from upcycled aircraft materials, elegant hospitality spaces, premium whisky and wine selections, live cooking stations, and panoramic tarmac views. The lounge also includes a private premium section reserved for first-class travelers, offering a more exclusive luxury experience.

Air India says the concept is intended to showcase modern Indian hospitality on a global stage while competing more aggressively with international carriers in premium long-haul travel markets. The launch follows the airline’s recently introduced flagship lounge in Delhi and signals broader ambitions to create a new generation of premium airport experiences across major global destinations.

CEO Campbell Wilson described North America as one of Air India’s most important international markets and said the airline is investing heavily to improve passenger experience, global connectivity, and brand perception. The company’s transformation comes as Air India continues expanding routes, modernizing aircraft fleets, upgrading onboard services, and repositioning itself as a world-class international carrier after decades of criticism over service quality and operational inefficiencies.

The announcement also arrives during a challenging period for the airline industry. Wilson acknowledged that Air India continues navigating operational pressures linked to geopolitical tensions, including restrictions involving Pakistan’s airspace, the economic impact of Middle East instability, and currency pressures caused by a strong U.S. dollar. He also revealed that discussions about future leadership succession are already underway as the airline’s large-scale transformation continues.

For many Indian travelers and diaspora communities across North America, the opening of the Maharaja Lounge is being viewed as both a branding milestone and a symbolic attempt to restore Air India’s reputation as a globally respected premium airline carrying the identity of modern India. 🌍✨
